Myth #1
Submitting your website to Google every week will improve your
website's search engine ranking. |
The world's most popular search engine - Google.com
- is a 'crawler-based' engine. This means is that it regularly
'crawls' the web - sending its computers to follow links from
pages to pages, and sites to sites; building up an extensive
database of websites as it goes along.
Google updates it's index of websites on a regular basis -
meaning that if a website [that is already in Google's index]
links to your website, then you can simply sit back and wait
for Google to find you!
Search engine submission and re-submission will make little
difference to this. In fact, Google's Webmaster Guidelines
explicitly state that "it
is NOT necessary to submit your site to Google in order to
be included in our index."
The reasons for this are simple. If search engines already
know your site exists, why do they need to know about it again?
Search engines thrive not only on producing relevant results,
but that their index of websites is up-to-date. It is in their
interest to regularly revisit your site, and therefore do
not require you (or a search engine submission company) to
do this for them.
Unnecessary or detrimental?
Rather than simply being unnecessary, many search engine professionals
believe that re-submitting can be detrimental. By regularly
re-submitting, what you are doing is using that search engine's
resources, and it is likely that this waste of resources will
be looked on unfavorably.... possibly by ranking your site
lower.
Many believe that you may actually achieve a more favourable
ranking if the search engine finds you on its own. |

Myth #2
Submitting to 10,000+ search engines will improve your website's
search engine ranking. |
There are about six major search engines -
not 10,000, 1,000 or even 100. Whats more, this small handful
of major players accounts for a huge majority of Internet
traffic.
Quality is what is important here - not quantity.
Google accounts for an estimated 75% of searches carried out
in the US. That's an astonishing percentage, and this goes
a long way to explain why spending time and money submitting
to many obscure search engines simply isn't worth-while.
To submit to a huge number of search engines requires computer
software, and with some of these engines explicitly stating
that automatic submission is unacceptable, there are strong
reasons to believe that sites may simply be penalized for
being submitted automatically.
Get More Email!
Submitting your site to a whole load of unknown 'search engines'
and other dubious sites could actually mean that your site
gets submitted to FFA (Free For All) engines or 'link farms'.
You'll see a hugh rise in email... but it won't be orders.
These types of listings are not only an excellent way for
your site to be penalised, but the only other results that
you are likely to see is an increase in spam email. |

| The Exceptions |
There are only two occasions when we at Clear
Design UK suggest paying a search engine submission company
to submit your site professionally. Exception
#1: PPC
Most major search engines now offer paid inclusion options,
and these do require submitting
to. Google for example, offers PPC (pay-per-click) options on
the right-hand side of it's results pages. Any company who wants
to advertise their site in this way, must bid on their search
terms and pay a fee each time someone clicks on their link.
Whilst the procedure to advertise is by no means rocket-science,
it will help to employ a professional search engine promotion
company to submit your site in the most appropriate, and cost-efficient
way. Exception #2: Online
Directories
Search engines regularly index human-edited directories such
as Yahoo, and so gaining links from this type of directory will
influence how Google and other engines rank your web site.
Inbound links from popular regional, national and international
directories can greatly improve your ranking - and so submitting
to these is one of the first stages in most search engine optimisation
packages.
There are a large number of online directories around, many
of which simply are not worth submitting to. However, once your
site has been accepted into some of the most important ones
(DMOZ, Gimpsy and JoeAnt etc.) you can virtually guarantee that
your website will start to be indexed by Google within a month
or so.
In the case of Bristol, there is a fantastic online directory
called 'Digital Bristol'. Once your website has been accepted,
you can pretty much guarantee that your website will be in Google's
index within a month or so. |
|
 |
| A Word Of Caution |
Simply being indexed by the major search engines
is all very well... but this merely means that your site is
contained in the search engine's databases. It does not ensure
that your site will enjoy a good search engine ranking.
There are many procedures involved in improving your website's
search engine ranking - including optimising of page text/titles,
restructuring of your site's navigation, developing links with
other websites, and including relevant 'tags' in your web pages. |
|
 |
| Conclusion |
Search engine submission and re-submission is
at best - unnecessary, and at worst - detrimental. Apart from
anything else, how exactly can you be sure that your search
engine submission company is actually doing anything at all?
Our professional search engine promotion service on the other
hand, will not only improve your website's ranking, but will
increase the number and variety of search terms you will be
found for. Unlike search engine submission, our service provides
genuine, quantifiable results.
